Website navigation

Website navigation helps you to find content easily on a website through various links that are added to the site. The process of finding the right things on a website is called navigation. The web navigation should be, and the user should know from where he is coming and where he is going. A clumsy or too overwhelming interface can be a great turn off for the users.

Here are some tips to follow when designing website navigation:

1.)    User-friendly language: The navigation is for the user so the labels and the links should be clear to him. Users should immediately understand what link is for what. It shouldn’t take much time for them to follow the links and then find the one that they are looking for.

2.)    Use web conventions: It is essential to use the web conventions that exist for a long time because they are deemed to work. Study the design and navigation basics clearly and share it with your designer. Frame your navigation in that way only so that it gives the best results out.

3.)    Primary navigation: Your site will always have stuff that you will want your audience to reach it first. So, to make it reach it should look appealing and be located in the right place. It should on the top of the page and either be in the center, right or left side of the page. It should have some unique features to differentiate it from all other parts of the page.

4.)    Logo link to homepage: You will find it in most of the website, and this is also one of the designing conventions. Always add the homepage link to the logo of your site.

5.)    Indicate where you are: When a user navigates through your website, he should know where he is. It is achieved by highlighting the current status, or the main image highlights the page title.
